Paid Ads Are Mostly Closed to NY Cannabis. Here's What Actually Works.

If you've tried to run Google or Meta ads for a New York cannabis brand, you know the feeling: disapproved, again. Here's the honest map of what's closed, what's open, and where to put your energy instead.

Can you run paid ads for a cannabis brand in New York?

Mostly no. Google prohibits ads for recreational cannabis and THC. Bing bans cannabis and CBD outright. Meta and TikTok allow only narrow, certified topical-CBD cases. For a licensed New York THC brand, paid search and social are effectively closed.

So where does growth come from?

  • Organic search. Google's index doesn't penalize cannabis content for being cannabis — write genuinely useful pages and you can rank.
  • Events and activations. One of the few channels fully open to you — and, with New York's new event-sales rules, a sales channel too.
  • Earned media and community. Press, budtender relationships, and real word-of-mouth carry more weight than any boosted post.

The brands that win in New York aren't the ones with the biggest ad budget — there isn't one to have. They're the ones who show up in the real world and build something people talk about.

That's our whole job. Take a look at what we do, or tell us what you're planning.
