On October 20, somewhere between the third customer asking for the highest number on the shelf and your fifteen-minute break, your phone fills up with brands saying thank you, budtenders. It's a nice feeling, and you scroll through a few of them with your coffee. Then the break is over, the phone goes back in your pocket, and the next person in line wants to know which of two vapes is better, and the day goes on the way every shift does.
So what does a thank-you actually do for you, and is there one that lasts longer than a break? We think about that a lot, since evenings for budtenders are what we make.
October 20 is International Budtender Day, which Leafly started marking in 2021 with classes and scholarships for budtenders. Since then it has become a day brands stop to say thanks to the people behind the counter.
A post is an honest way to do that. A brand can't visit every store that carries it on one Tuesday in October, so one message goes out to all of those counters at once, yours included, and the people who write it mean it. We like seeing them, and we hope you get a few that make you smile.
Think about the last time you really felt thanked at work. Chances are it involved someone's time. A manager who stayed after close to hear you out, or a regular who came back a week later to tell you the thing you recommended was exactly right. What made it land was that somebody made room for you.
That's the part a date on the calendar can't carry by itself. The day lives in your feed, and appreciation at full strength happens in person. It looks like an evening someone cleared for you, outside your shift, where you're the guest. The brands come to you, with time to talk, instead of you fitting them in between customers.
It also changes what a conversation with a brand can be. At the counter you get a minute at most. At a table with nowhere else to be, you can ask the thing you've wondered about for months and hear the whole answer. And if the talk turns around and someone asks you what customers say about their pre-rolls, why people pass on one, or what you wish you'd known before it hit your shelf, you'll have plenty to tell them, because you're the one who hears it all day.
That's the evening we try to build with Budtender XP, and the next one is our Halloween edition.
Budtender XP: Haunted Dreams takes over 1896 Studios in Bushwick on Wednesday, October 28, 2026, at 6 PM. Think dreamy installations, eerie projections, live piano and unexpected encounters, with brand teams who came with time to talk. Come dressed for the occasion, bring your curiosity, and get ready to get a little lost in the experience.
We can't wait to show you what we've been working on, and the whole point is that it's yours for the night. Nobody is waiting at a register, nobody needs you to ring anything up, and the brand teams walked in to see you.
On the 20th your phone will say thank you, and that's worth a smile on your break. On the 28th we'd love to say it to your face, in costume if you're up for it. Save your spot on WNR Pass; it's for verified budtenders and industry professionals, 21+.
