Updated October 2026
It's Saturday afternoon, the line reaches the door, and a brand rep is standing by the register with a tote bag, asking if you have five minutes. You don't. Twenty minutes later a customer asks how the flower in that jar was grown, and the best you can do is read them the label. That night someone in the group chat drops a flyer for an industry event on a Wednesday, and you start doing the math on trading a shift for it.
Some of these events are worth it, and some were built for other people. For a New York budtender, the good ones put you in front of the people who make the product, away from the counter, with enough time to ask the questions customers keep asking you. Here's how we'd sort this fall's calendar.
Short version for New York budtenders: the state's Office of Cannabis Management lists community conversations, workforce training and education events at cannabis.ny.gov/events. Trade shows like Hall of Flowers New York and Revelry Buyers' Club are built for buyers who place orders. The nights built for you are evenings off the shift where brand teams come to answer your questions, like Budtender XP: Haunted Dreams on October 28 in Bushwick, Brooklyn.
Start with the state. The Office of Cannabis Management keeps an Events page with community conversations (a presentation, then Q&A), workforce training and medical-cannabis education. It covers all of New York State, so check the city on each listing before you get your hopes up. Registration and accessibility details live on each organizer's own listing, and that's where you sign up.
Sometimes the most interesting thing on that list isn't in the city at all. OCM announced the Cannabinoids in Clinical Practice and Research Symposium with Albert Einstein College of Medicine–Montefiore for November 19–20, 2026, in Tarrytown. If the science side is what keeps you curious, it's worth the train ride.
Most trade shows in New York are set up around buying. Hall of Flowers New York is listed on an industry calendar for October 21–22, 2026, at Pier 36, and Revelry Buyers' Club already ran in September, so it's one to watch for next season. Check each organizer for who gets in before you plan around it.
Our take: at a buyer show, brand teams are there to talk orders, and their attention follows whoever can place one. If your manager or buyer brings you along, go. You'll see a lot of what could end up on your shelf. If you're spending a day off on your own, know who the room was built for, and don't expect a long conversation about how anything is made.
Because of when they come. We hear the same story over and over: the rep shows up mid-shift, while you're serving customers, and nobody has a free minute to listen. When there is a minute, more than half of the talk is the founder's story and the packaging. How it was grown, how it was made, and what makes it different from the jar next to it get a sentence or two, if that.
Your store probably isn't filling that gap either. Budtenders tell us their stores have almost no training of their own. The state's training covers safety and the law, and there's no state program for product knowledge. That leaves the stuff customers ask you about most to whatever you pick up between transactions.
So when you look at an event, ask one question. Will you get to put your own question to someone who makes the product, and get a real answer? If yes, it's probably worth the shift. If you'd mostly be watching other people make deals, keep the hours.
That gap is the reason we run Budtender XP as its own evening, outside your shift, with brand teams there to answer your questions. We've written up how a Budtender XP night works if you've never been.
The next one in the city is Budtender XP: Haunted Dreams, Wednesday, October 28, at 6 PM at 1896 Studios in Bushwick. It's our Halloween edition, so come in costume.
