You're driving to your next store with a new batch about to ship, and you already know what the buyer will say, because they all say it: there's a line of brands ahead of you. The state's latest numbers suggest that line is about to get longer.
As of August 2026, New York had about 12 million square feet of licensed cannabis canopy, which is the growing space cultivators are licensed to use, according to the second cultivation review from the Office of Cannabis Management. That's up 32% since March, and the new space came from growers moving up to bigger licenses and from new growers getting licensed. When OCM took its count, more than half of this year's plants were still in the ground, so plenty of that flower is still on its way.
Stores sold $512.6 million in the third quarter, and every new jar still competes for the few minutes a budtender gets with each customer. More flower doesn't make those minutes any longer. When the buyer tells you about the line, that's what they mean.
A jar in a crowded case rarely sells itself. A label is easy to walk past. A grower who stood in front of you and answered your question is a lot harder to forget, and the brand next to you can't get that from more canopy.
With more jars arriving every month, a budtender has seconds to pick one for a customer. So try this on the batch in your trunk. Could a budtender who has never met you say, in two sentences, what's in that jar and which customer they'd hand it to?
You're in the car anyway, so try those two sentences out loud before you park. If they come out easily, they're ready for your rep, for the buyer and for the people behind the counter.
Ask for the slot, the way you were going to, and then leave the buyer something more than a price: the two sentences, and an offer to come back yourself, before the store opens or after it closes, so the team can hear about the batch from the person who made it and ask you anything they like. The line of brands won't get shorter this fall. The people at the counter will still remember the founder who came in and answered their questions, and in our experience that's what gets a jar moving.
