The invoice is three months old, the store had 30 days to pay, and the buyer keeps saying next week. You're calling again from the car, wondering whether there's anything to do besides wait. In New York there is, and since September 15 it runs through Metrc, the system the state uses to track cannabis from seed to sale.
You're also far from the only one making this call. As of September 2026, 87 licensed stores were on the state's cash-on-delivery list, according to figures the Office of Cannabis Management (OCM) showed its advisory board on September 10 and MJBizDaily reported a week later. Between them they owed suppliers about $3.89 million. A store on that list can only buy for cash at delivery until it pays what it owes and OCM takes it off the list.
Under OCM's rules, a store that buys on credit has 30 days to pay in full, and after that the supplier is required to report the unpaid bill, which is what puts a store on the list. Your delivery went out before September 15, so it belongs to the old system. Bills like yours are reported through OCM's older C.O.D. Reporting platform, and the deadline for those is October 22, 2026. OCM's October 9 reminder spells that out and links a step-by-step reporting flowchart, so it's the page to open first. From October 23 the old platform stops taking late-payment reports, so if next week turns into the week after, you don't have long to decide.
That worry is probably why you're calling again instead of reporting. The rules don't say anything about how a buyer will take it. What they do say is that reporting isn't up to you: OCM's September bulletin calls it "not optional," and a supplier who doesn't report in time may face further regulatory action. They also say a store on the list can keep buying from you, for cash at delivery, and once it pays, you report the payment in full. On paper, then, the account survives a report. What changes is the terms, until the bill is paid and OCM takes the store off the list.
For deliveries from September 15 on, you record each credit sale in Metrc with its own invoice number and report a late payment in the same place. Metrc flags the stores on the list and blocks credit deliveries to them. A store can see its own standing there and dispute a report it thinks is wrong by sending OCM its paperwork, though the bulletins don't say how long a dispute takes.
Brand teams tell us a big part of their week already goes to driving between stores and chasing answers, and few calls wear on you like the one about a late invoice. Now at least part of that check can happen before you extend credit instead of three months after. Close to nine in ten stores aren't on the list, and you can see which ones are before the truck goes out. It also helps to know the person at the store who approves paying your bill well enough to call them on day 31, because a call to someone you know tends to go further than a reminder to someone you don't.
So make the call you're making. If the buyer gives you a date and it holds, good. If it doesn't, report the bill on OCM's older platform by October 22 and let the list do the asking. Then, before the next truck goes out to anyone, look the store up in Metrc first.
